The Latest Trends in At-Home Computing
If you had proclaimed prior to the pandemic that at-home computing would be the center of our soon-to-be work life, some people might have called you crazy. With the ever-increasing demand for remote working solutions, the at-home computing market might reap the benefits–in 2024. However, even with the pandemic forcing learning centers and libraries to close temporarily, PC sales continued to decline in 2022.
Computing in a Nutshell

At the latest CES conference in early January 2023, we learned that AI would be our future. AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su stood on a stage and proudly declared, “AI is the defining megatrend in technology.” She also claims supercomputing and other high-performance computing applications will soon fuel sectors such as finance, scientific research and healthcare. What does that mean for at-home computing? PCs and desktops are still declining thanks to handheld computing and the abovementioned trends.
At-Home Computing Market Trends

The PC industry gathered revenue worth about $38.2 billion in 2021 and is slated to accumulate approximately $50.25 billion in returns by 2028. In addition, the Flexible Electronics market is set to register a CAGR of nearly 6 percent from 2022 to 2028. The growth of the PC market over the forecasting timeline is subject to massive sales of at-home computing products. According to NASDAQ, “Personal computers (desktops and laptops), be it Windows or Apple’s MacOS-based ones, have been facing extinction due to the rapid proliferation of smartphones and tablets. Stiff competition from smartphones has compelled global PC makers to upgrade hardware frequently and add apps and cloud-based services to attract consumers. Nevertheless, the emergence of 5G, AI, machine learning and foldable computers is likely to be the key catalyst in expanding the total addressable market of PCs.”
The Future of At-Home Computing

While PCs might be on the decline, there is still a future for at-home computing. At-home computing is taking a different path after the latest reveals at CES 2023. The gaming industry primarily drives the trends we have seen. Monitors are catching up with those fancy OLED TVs. Companies like Samsung offer OLED screens with integrated speakers and super-fast displays featuring 500Hz panels, like the 57-inch Odyssey Neo G9. The new Alienware laptop is what gamers dream of because its beautiful 18-inch screen comes with a USB 2.0 port and four USB 3.0 ports–an insane amount of ports.
What does this mean for at-home computing? The more products they launch with bigger and better features, the more people will buy. The gaming industry is growing at an exponential rate. When you compare consoles to steam, steam is still king. That means at-home computing will only increase thanks to this market alone.
