Expansion of Manufacturing for the Semiconductor Industry

EMD Electronics, the electronics business of Merck, Darmstadt, Germany, in the U.S., has made an agreement with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The deal supports the expansion of manufacturing capacities for the semiconductor industry. The 300 million Euro investment ($328 million U.S. dollars) is aimed at accelerating innovation and capabilities as part of the company’s “Level Up” program.

The demand for semiconductors remains promising long-term, despite the global economy. According to the Pennsylvania Government, “EMD Electronics plans to meet surging demand in the electronics and semiconductor industries by doubling the production capacity of tungsten hexafluoride and nitrogen trifluoride, critical components in semiconductor manufacturing.”

The Governor’s Action Team backed the deal with a $1,062,500 Pennsylvania First grant from the Department of Community and Economic Development and a $122,000 workforce development grant to train workers. EMD Electronics will create approximately 120 jobs with the facility’s construction, retain 289 existing jobs and create 68 in-facility jobs.

Pennsylvania is Open for Business

“We are planting a flag and sending a clear message to the world that Pennsylvania is open for business,” said Governor Shapiro. “We have enormous potential here in Pennsylvania to be an economic leader and drive innovation on a global scale. Investments in projects like this one further prove this point. EMD Electronics is expanding and bringing more jobs to Schuylkill County. Let’s work together to make more projects like this possible. The entire Shapiro Administration stands ready to promote that growth and ensure we make Pennsylvania a leader in economic development and opportunity.”
