California Pledges Funds for a Cleaner Supply Chain
California has helped fund the nation’s first training facility distinctively devoted to supply chain employees within the San Pedro Bay port complex. The goal is to attract, retain and retain workers in the goods movement sector. The state is also working toward the goal of zero-emissions operations by 2023.
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act

After decades of neglect, the Infrastructure Investment Act is set to improve the supply chain from ship to store. Supply Chain Dive informs us, “The need to clear congestion and get cargo moving led to a string of investments such as the Biden Administration signing the $1.2 trillion Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. The legislation added about $100 billion in funding through a series of grant programs to address supply chain inefficiencies with one program addressing port congestion and improving the movement of goods.” Thus, it will help build the Goods Movement Training Campus for supply chain workers at the Ports of Los Angeles.
The Goods Movement Training Campus

In order to fuel supply chain fluidity, our ports need new technologies and training to support our dockworkers, truck drivers, and warehouse employees. According to Hey SoCal, “It is the people, our workforce, who show up every day to work on our docks, that make our port strong and competitive,” said Los Angeles City Councilman Tim McOsker in a statement. “This center will empower workers in logistics to adapt, maintain and repair zero-emission technologies efficiently and productively.” The 20-acre facility is slated to open in 2029.
The Future of the Supply Chain

In 2021, the White House reported that the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports import 40 percent of the nation’s containerized imports. With over 370,000 people employed in the ports and $416 billion in annual two-way trade in the LA Customs District, the two ports knew they needed to modernize to sustain the supply chain. With the training facility, adding robotics, and other innovative container movement systems, the $110 million will boost the logistics energy for future generations of the supply chain and port employees.
