BMW Introduces the i Vision Dee

The concept of color-changing cars sounds pretty sweet. But is it legal? Will it really happen or is it just a clever marketing campaign for the BMW Group? Much like the Cybertruck from Tesla and Elon Musk, the question still remains: can this be a reality?

You can preorder the Cybertruck from Tesla for $100 and complete your configuration as production nears. The start of beta and limited production is to start mid 2023, but has already been pushed back several times. Seeing that the small $100 down payment is fully refundable, the Tesla Cybertruck might just be a dream for a little while longer.

The World’s First Color-Changing Car

BMW has been fast paced in concepting the first color-changing car since CES 2022 when the group introduced iX Flow to the world. The iX Flow was designed to change its appearance digitally. The concept was to laminate the body of the car with an electrophoretic film containing microcapsules the diameter of a human hair. According to BMW, “Each capsule contains differently charged white, black or colored particles which become visible when an electric field is applied. This creates what is known as an Electronic Paper Display (EPD). However, BMW also claims the limits of personalization are far from being reached.”

BMW i Vision Dee

PEXELS

Unlike the iX Flow, i Vision Dee is the world’s first full-color version of the EPD technology and the concept is that she is to be more of a companion than a car. BMW explains, “Dee is a car that’s more than a means of transportation, but an ultimate companion. She is the first BMW with a digital soul. Once inside Dee’s cabin, you’ll be greeted by your own personal avatar on the driver’s side windows—it’s just one of the many ways Dee immerses you in digital experiences. Dee is your portal to the digital realm. Simply touch one of the four Shy-Tech sensors on the BMW Mixed Reality Slider to project everything from augmented reality scenes to full virtual worlds right onto your windshield. The kidney grille and headlights fuse together to form a sleek digital panel. Innovative E ink technology lets you change Dee’s exterior color whenever your mood changes. With her incredible intellect, Dee can express a range of emotions. She can speak, listen, and understand your wishes. Her voice can even be heard by those outside the vehicle.”

Things to Consider

There are a few factors to consider when purchasing a color changing car. If it happens, will it be street legal? For states like California with strict regulations there may be some doubt as to whether you can drive the car on the open road. Cities like San Francisco ban you from painting your car black, because it makes it hard to see at night. Also, neon colors are a no in other cities. So, while you might want to be fast and furious in a color changing car, and the concept is cool, it might not ever be legal.
