Each of the 16 I/O pins powers up as an input by default and can be individually reconfigured as an output through the device’s configuration registers. A polarity-inversion register lets the host invert the sense of input pins without additional software overhead, and an open-drain active-LOW interrupt (/INT) output alerts the host whenever an input state changes, eliminating the need for continuous polling.
