It is functionally and pin-compatible with the industry-standard DS1307 architecture, making it a convenient drop-in option for time-keeping subsystems. The clock/calendar tracks seconds, minutes, hours, day-of-week, date, month, and year, with automatic end-of-month adjustment and leap-year compensation valid through the year 2100. Time can be presented in either 24-hour or 12-hour AM/PM format.

Communication is handled entirely over the bidirectional I²C bus, simplifying the interface to a host microcontroller. The device includes 56 bytes of general-purpose battery-backed non-volatile SRAM with no write-cycle limits, a programmable square-wave output signal, and an automatic power-fail detection circuit that switches to a backup battery so timekeeping continues uninterrupted during a main-supply loss.
