The Xinluda XD3916 is a monolithic integrated circuit that senses analog voltage levels and drives a column of ten LEDs, LCDs, or vacuum fluorescent displays, providing an electronic version of the popular VU meter. One pin selectable between a moving-dot or bar-graph display mode, the XD3916 is functionally and pin-compatible with the industry-standard LM3916, making it a practical drop-in for audio VU meters, power meters, and level-indication applications. The device is supplied in an 18-lead plastic dual in-line (DIP-18) package.

Internally, a high-impedance input buffer drives a precision ten-step voltage divider feeding ten comparators, each referenced to a different threshold along the VU scale. The output drive current is regulated and programmable with a single external resistor and the on-chip adjustable reference, eliminating the need for current-limiting resistors on each LED.
